As the Lesbian Outreach board member I think is’t important to provide an overview of Lesbainism throughout history. In this sidebar however, I will be providing my own thoughts and experience of my own recent coming out process.
Recent history of defining the “L”
First formed in the mid 1950s the Daughters of Bilitis (pronounced Bill-E-tis) were the first group of leasbians networks in the United States, They were founded in the San Francisco bay area in 1955. Soon after that began publishing The Ladder – a periodcal developed exclusivly In fact, it wa one of the first puplications launched in the overall Queer/Gay community.
Did you know it was GLBT originally?
The “L” in LGBTQ stands for lesbians. The “L” comes first in the acronym for a reason. In the starting stage of the gay rights movement, gay men were largely the ones running the show. There was a focus on men’s issues and lesbians (as well as trans people of both genders) were largely unrecognized, hence the common GLBT acronym. (Read the full Foward article)
